1. Start with a delicious chilled beverage, such as bottle of Montinore Estate Almost Dry Riesling ($12.99). According to Song Lee, this wine features crisp, bright citrus notes without being too sweet, making it a perfect cheese-friendly wine.
2. Continue packing your basket with a fresh-baked baguette or a box of Potter’s Crackers ($6.99). Handmade in Madison, Wis., these gourmet crackers are a delicious accompaniment to cheeses and meats.
3. Also from Madison comes a selection of preserves from a small company called Quince and Apple. Try flavors such as Figs and Black Tea or Pear with Honey Ginger ($7.99), both of which are made in small batches and are the perfect accompaniment for any cheese.
4. Try a cheddar that’s anything but boring. According to Lee, Montgomery’s Cheddar ($13/½ lb.) is the king of all cheddar. “Traditionally made by Jamie Montgomery from Somerset, England, this cloth-bound cheddar is the real thing.”
5. To add a little oomph to your picnic menu, add in the gorgeous washed-rind cheese Epoisse ($15.50 each). “Some might consider this pungent, but it’s oh so delicious,” says Lee. “Spread some on a piece of crusty baguette along with the preserves for a piece of Paris right here in Edina.”
6. Last but not least, bring along the addictive Fra’mani Salametto ($13/½ lb.) dry salami from San Francisco. “Made with a hint of wine and sea salt,” says Lee, “everyone will be fighting for a slice.”
