1. Babysitter Training

As one of Edina Community Education’s most popular Summer Shades camps, Babysitter Training sessions incorporate hands-on activities with children as they visit the Childcare Center and Kids Club in the Community Center. Fire Marshall Tom Jensen also makes a stop in, to teach about fire safety. “It is a fun week for kids with great skill building activities,” says Edina Community Education Youth Enrichment Manager Lori Murphy.

2. Tennis Camp

For five years, Edina Parks and Rec and Edina Community Ed have partnered to put on this popular camp, offered in beginning and advanced levels. “The half-day camps include skill development, conditioning, a little competition and lots of fun all rolled into a camp-style program,” says Murphy.

3. Summer Band Experience

Directed by middle school band teachers Geneva Fitzsimonds and Amanda Kremer, this multi-week marching band clinic for grades 8–10 is repeating again this year. Last year, over 70 kids participated! Over the summer, the band goes on to perform at the Fourth of July parade and Valley Fair.

4. Outdoor Survival Camp

Offered in partnership with the Three Rivers Park District, this Monday–Thursday camp busses kids to a nearby park, where they’ll learn valuable outdoor skills, survival basics, and safety in wilderness situations. “They have been very popular and very well run,” says Murphy.

5. Boost Your Math and Reading Camps

Kids in grades 2–7 can polish up their skills and get a little extra practice before school begins in the fall. Camps are offered in half days, though they easily fit together for a full day that covers both subjects. The camps are staffed mostly by Edina teachers, and they also offer a similar program specifically for students of Normandale French Immersion school.
