Images of Edina: Geese on Minnehaha Creek

A local doctor snags the Plants and Wildlife prize in the 2011 Images of Edina photo contest.

What does it take to create a perfect wildlife photo? If you’re Martin Freeman, you’ll start with a perfect location (Minnehaha Creek) at a perfect time (a springtime snow melt), and start snapping when you spot a specimen that strikes your fancy. This pair of Canadian Geese breezed past Freeman’s back yard during mating season, and exhibited what he viewed as “exact synchronous movements, dipping [their] beaks in the water at the exact same time... I’m not a bird behavior expert, but that looks a lot like a courtship ritual to me.” Love was in the air—also from the judges who awarded “Courting Canadian Geese on Minnehaha Creek” top honors in the Plants and Wildlife category of this year’s Images of Edina photo contest.
