Edina has been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Youth for the third year by America’s Promise. The organization cites five criteria in a community when considering this award: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others.
“These conditions are fundamental resources that young people need to succeed,” says Julie Rogers Bascom, service learning coordinator of the Edina school district. “Research tells us that if a young person has four or more of these conditions, their chances for academic, social and citizenship success increases.”
America’s Promise chose Edina based on the following achievements: Edina Public Schools has a 99 percent graduation rate and provides youth with programs that help them grow up to be active citizens; the Edina Community Foundation offers community service programs and safety awareness sessions; Edina’s “Connecting with Kids” program brings together city, public school officials and faith leaders to support young people.
