The Edina High School Theatre program is good—you’d make this obvious observation if you attended any of the Thespians’ shows this past season. But you know your prestige hits new heights when the governor names a day after you. And, behold, June 17, 2011 is Edina High School Theatre Day, proclaimed by Governor Mark Dayton.
This proclamation was spurred by the success of EHS Thespians’ fall production of Anything Goes, which after earning numerous local and national awards, was selected to perform at the 2011 International Thespian Festival. Not only will EHS perform Anything Goes at the festival June 20-25 at the University of Lincoln-Nebraska—an accomplishment of note on its own—but it’s one of eight elite productions (chosen out of the 250 high school troupes at the festival) selected to perform on the main stage. To put things in perspective, EHS is the first Minnesota school in over 40 years to be selected for a main stage performance at the festival.
Fittingly, Anything Goes will hit the stage locally one last time prior to the festival as a benefit performance on Edina High School Theatre Day. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Edina Performing Arts Center. Donations for general admission seating are encouraged (a minimum of $10 is requested), and all funds raised will help pay for the cost of sending the show to the international festival.
