Edina Native Mary McGuire Tracks Big City News

Edina native and former Tiger Oak Publications intern Mary McGuire won the prestigious 2013 David Kaplan Memorial Fellowship and recently enjoyed a four-month paid fellowship with ABC News’ Washington, D.C., bureau. In May, McGuire graduated with a master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism, where she earned her journalism chops as a reporter, anchor and producer with KOMU-8 News and Missouri Digital News. While in the nation’s capital, McGuire covered congressional hearings, White House, Pentagon and State Department briefings and Supreme Court arguments. She helped produce national news packages, live shots for correspondents and conducted interviews for ABC’s news magazine franchise 20/20. Now in its 20th year, the fellowship program was created by Sam Donaldson of ABC News to honor journalist David Kaplan, who was killed on assignment in Bosnia, in 1992.“The opportunity to report from the nation's capital during historic events such as the presidential inauguration and same-sex marriage arguments at the Supreme Court has helped define me both as a journalist and as a person,” says McGuire, who graduated from the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield in 2007. This month, she will begin working as an anchor and multi-media journalist at KTTC-TV/Fox 47 in Rochester, Minn.
