The medical staff at Fairview Southdale Hospital is serious about the phrase, “Children are our future.” Each year the hospital honors 16 students from eight area schools, including Edina High School, with its Fairview Southdale Medical Staff Scholarship. “We’ve been doing this for about 30 years,” says vice president of medical affairs Richard Karulf. “Many of us were helped early in our careers, and we want to pay it forward.”
The 16 recipients, two from each school, are chosen by their guidance counselors for their academic achievements, community involvement and interest in the medical profession. Maelle Attikossie and Fahima Osman are the 2017 recipients from Edina.
“I’m just amazed at the caliber of the students that have been chosen by the guidance counselors,” Karulf says. “We’re looking at the next generation of health care providers, and we want to say that we’re encouraging them.”
