A Holiday Kick

Local bartenders share their favorite seasonal cocktail tips.

The holidays are for indulging. Gifts. Friends. Family. Food. And of course, a few celebratory drinks. There is something special about a festive holiday cocktail. Amy Danielson, bartender at Edina Grill, suggests trying drinks “that remind you of Christmas with their smell. Something that really triggers good memories.” For her, cinnamon is one of the best holiday flavors.

Andy Shields, beverage manager at Pittsburgh Blue, says, “As the years go on, with craft beers and craft cocktails, the kitschy kind of fad stuff goes away.” Danielson and Shields served up some creative drink ideas. Here is one of our favorites.

Cinnamon Apple Martini

2 oz. Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps
1 oz. apple liqueur
1 oz. pineapple juice
Cinnamon
Apple slice for garnish

Combine the cinnamon schnapps, apple liqueur and pineapple juice. Garnish the rim of your martini glass with cinnamon and apple.

No matter what your drink of choice is, our bartenders have one piece of advice: Don’t be afraid to branch out. Try your own recipes. Be bold. Make something new. In the end, some of the best drink recipes may come from your own imagination (and liquor cabinet).
