For the past 10 years, the Edina Chamber of Commerce has recognized exceptional educators with an annual Teacher of the Year award. “[We are] looking for a teacher who goes above and beyond their commitment to the school, students and also the community,” says Erica Hollom, member services director of the chamber. These teachers can be nominated by anyone in the Edina Public School system, as well as by students or their parents, or community members. This year’s recipient was Geneva Fitzsimonds, band teacher at South View Middle School.
Fitzsimonds was nominated by her colleague, Charles Weise, who was supported by many students and other staff, including principal Beth Russell: “She has a passion for band, for music, for kids having this experience.” The Chamber of Commerce and award sponsor Royal Credit Union presented Fitzsimonds with the honor, including a check for $500, during a band concert in May.
