Miriam Barber Judd led a remarkable life. The wife of Dr. Walter Judd, a medical missionary who became a congressman, Miriam raised three daughters while her husband pursued his various careers. Miriam participated in election campaigns, taught English in India, lived in China before fleeing Communist and Japanese attacks and played a lead role in desegregating the YWCA. She was also a prolific letter writer, chronicling events, feelings and struggles in many letters written to her family.
Mary Lou Judd Carpenter, daughter of Miriam Barber Judd, has released an edited selecton of the nearly 2,000 letters her mother left behind in Miriam’s Words: The Personal Price of a Public Life (Miriam’s Legacy Publishing, September 2013).
