Don’t worry, be happy. Late 80s musician Bobby McFerrin’s voice may have been echoing through the ears of Edina City Council members last week when they unanimously changed their city’s policy of prohibiting happy hour discounts on alcohol. Whatever prompted the council to make Edina Minnesota’s last city to allow liquor discounts, such conformity will be welcomed by many.
David Burley, CEO of Blue Plate Restaurant Company, is one who lobbied for the change. As co-owner of Edina Grill (5028 France Avenue South), his proposal came down to Economics 101. Restaurants and bars in neighboring cities were at a competitive advantage due to their ability to offer cheaper drinks.
“Happy-hour pricing means we will no longer be at a competitive disadvantage to restaurants in nearby cities,” Burley says, “and Edina will be much more appealing for those who just want to enjoy a less expensive drink with friends.”
Now that Edina restaurants are no longer short-handed, it’s time to celebrate. Edina Grill is hosting a Happy Hour Kick-off Party Thursday, May 10, from 4-10 p.m. that will feature $1 drinks (from 4-6 p.m.) and half-price appetizers. The event will also feature 33-cent classic cocktails to commemorate of the end of prohibition.
“We’re very excited and can’t wait to raise our glasses to toast happy-hour with our guests,” Burley says.
Edina Grill’s regular happy-hour will be Monday through Friday from 4-6 p.m. in the bar and patio and will include half-price appetizers, $3 and $4 tap beers, $3 cans, $4-$5 wine and $3 rail drinks.
