As Minnesota gears up to host the 2015 National Senior Games, one Edina woman is ready for action. Susan Adams Loyd competes in track and field, and at age 56 she sees no reason to slow down. “I have always said that athletics, exercise and daily activity are truly the fountain of youth,” Loyd says. Ten years ago, Loyd rediscovered her spark to compete and she encourages others her age to follow suit.
The National Senior Games have similar rules and regulations to the Olympic games. In addition to track and field, competitions including bowling, cycling, golf, archery, pickleball, badminton, volleyball, basketball, softball, swimming and a triathlon. The Minnesota state games will be held August 1–9, and the national games will follow in July 2015. Loyd encourages athletes and non-athletes to get involved, “You can compete, volunteer, sponsor or spectate,” says Loyd. “Sometimes watching is just as fun as participating.”
