A Fire Chief with a Familiar Face

Veteran Edina firefighter is tapped as new fire chief.

On February 18, the city of Edina witnessed the return of a familiar face. After a short stint as Eden Prairie’s assistant fire chief, Tom Schmitz, an 18-year veteran of the Edina fire department, was named Edina’s new fire chief.

Although his responsibilities as fire chief differ from his previous positions in special operations, paramedics, firefighting, and training and safety, it didn’t take Schmitz long to settle back in to life with Edina’s fire department. “It’s like riding a bicycle,” he says. “I even walked into my old office once by mistake.”
