Six tips on library use in honor of the late, great Dr. Seuss.

For Tracy Hvezda-Lehtola, youth services librarian at the Hennepin County Edina Library, her bibliophilia began with The Babysitters Club. Hvezda-Lehtola and her twin sister shared the books with a circle of friends, eventually forming their version of the fictional club. These days, the Edina librarian organizes book clubs for kids and teens. In observation of Read Across America (Dr. Seuss) Day on March 2, she shares tips to help your family make reading an everyday activity.
- Be a role model. Let your kids catch you reading.
- Go digital. The library’s collection includes thousands of e-books. Technical difficulties? Connect with technical staff on site or via phone, text or live chat.
- Reading should be varied like a diet. Combat genre fixation with “bridge books” or by signing your child up for a free book club.
- Engage in your child’s reading experience. Ask for a summary or invite them to re-imagine a book’s ending.
- Use the five-finger test to select reading-level appropriate material. Have your child raise a finger for every word she doesn’t know. Five fingers up by the bottom of the page? The book may be too challenging.
- Consult the Hennepin County Library’s online resources. At hclib.org, find booklists and School Library Journal reviews.
