Beyond the Classroom

Edina High School offers unique learning experiences during May Term.

For more than 10 years, Edina High School seniors have been able to job shadow for prominent companies in the community during Senior May Term. And last year, sophomores and juniors were also given the opportunity to try out a job-shadow program. This is called May Term for All, when, during the last few days of the school year, Edina High School students have the unique opportunity to “explore the world outside of high school,” says Mellanie Pusateri, May Term for All advisor.

A group of EHS teachers, including Pusateri, decided that before students chose which field they would like to shadow during senior year, they could choose from among a few options beforehand. These younger students can choose from many interesting courses such as scuba diving and drone building. Pusateri considers May Term for All a chance to “let the kids have a voice in their education.”Seniors have had opportunities to work with companies such as Jostens and Alex’s Lemonade Stand. One instance in particular, Pusateri remembers, included Fox Sports North and then-EHS senior Jenny Taft. Due to this experience and connection, Taft now lives in Los Angeles as a Fox sports commentator.

May Term for All lasts six days for sophomores and juniors, and Senior May Term lasts nine days. The experience culminates the night before the last day of the program when seniors give presentations about what they’ve learned during the term. This year’s presentations are scheduled for Thursday, June 2, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Edina High School. The community is welcome to come and support the students.
