Edina beautician Rachael Joy had a “hairbrained” idea last year to pursue a sort of business partnership with her 3 ½-year-old daughter. “I thought a hair braiding class would be fun to do together,” Joy says. “To get other moms and daughters together for a fun, hands-on hair braiding experience.” Braids are all the rage in hairstyling right now so Joy’s timing turns out to be pretty perfect. She began offering mother/daughter hair braiding classes through Edina Community Education and has expanded into Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. Her class provides instruction on three different braids along with tips to make them more elaborate. A gift bag for students includes all the essential tools necessary for recreating the braids at home, along with a step-by-step instruction guide.
Joy’s success has inspired her to also become a volunteer braiding instructor for single moms and their daughters as an opportunity offered through the Jeremiah Project. “I love partnering with the community,” Joy says.
