You’ve probably heard by now that geocaching is the latest craze in outdoor recreation. Geocaching, a word that combines earth with the French word for storage, uses GPS technology to locate prizes hidden throughout parks and open areas. Participants in these programs at Three Rivers Park District will learn the basics of how to use GPS units for recreational use and then head outdoors to search for the tokens.
“It is essentially treasure hunting with technology,” says recreation specialist Alex McKinney, adding that what’s in the cache is part of what makes the hunt so exciting. Prizes can include lottery tickets, mini football helmets, key chains, stickers and more.
Sign up for the next class, where all instruction and technology will be provided for the evening. “It gets people outside, helps keep them healthy and creates memories they will want to share with family and friends,” says McKinney.
