Rising to the Challenge

Edina initiative helps make city programs accessible to disadvantaged kids.

After being named one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People in America” by America’s Promise Alliance, the Edina Community Foundation went to work making sure Edina lived up to its reputation by launching the Edina Challenge, an ongoing initiative with a goal to maximize access to community resources and opportunities for underprivileged kids. The parks and recreation department, churches, schools and community centers have joined the challenge and are aiding implementation of a variety of tutoring and extra-curricular programs for Edina youth. “We want to see improvement in the number of disadvantaged youth taking advantage of Edina’s assets,” Community Foundation board member and Challenge chairwoman Mamie Segall says.
