Caregiver support group offers a shoulder for helping hands.

Caregivers strive to keep elderly loved ones in their own homes as long as possible, by helping with little things like groceries and housework, and growing from there. According to social worker Krystal Wiebusch, family members and friends provide 92 percent of senior long-term care in Minnesota, and Edina is no exception.

Sometimes caregivers need a little extra care, too. Few things in life can be more stressful than tending to the daily needs of an aging loved one. Encouraging feedback can ease the strain.

The Edina Senior Center sponsors a caregiver support group free of charge. “People really love it,” says Donna Tilsner, recreation supervisor.

After a session talking to others going through the same issues, participants leave feeling better. “So many who are caretaking for a loved one need that outlet,” says Wiebusch. As the meeting facilitator, Wiebusch hears about challenges ranging from guilt to fatigue to financial constraints and more. “It’s a safe place and a private place to vent frustrations. Most people who come once come back. People really learn from others,” she says.

The Edina caregivers’ support group meets on the first Thursday each month from 1–2:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. To attend, call Krystal Wiebusch at 952.746.4028.
