Firefighters safeguard the community, but the Edina Fire Department goes above and beyond the call of duty through their outreach with Edina youth. The department was honored with a Connecting with Kids Leadership award in February, but fire inspector Brian Hanrahan says it’s all in a day’s work.
“It was just something we did for fun or naturally,” Hanrahan says. “To get recognized for it is great.” That “something” includes giving kids fire station tours, attending block parties, participating in parades, visiting schools and the department’s annual safety camp, all of which help educate children about fire safety. For Hanrahan, the most rewarding part of outreach is hearing about kids putting their lessons to use.
