Aspire Beverage Company has a solid connection to the Edina sports world. The company’s co-founder John Montague is an Edina youth coach, and Aspire’s beverages are sold at Edina concession stands. Edina high school students also helped Aspire develop their products by taste-testing and communicating what they want in the Aspire drink. Now Aspire is giving back by setting up an Athlete of the Week contest.
Each week, athletic directors and coaches nominate students who stand out on their respective teams. Aspire requires the nominees to qualify in four categories: athletics, academic, community involvement and character. These categories separate those who may be statistically successful from teammates who are tremendous leaders outside of the arena too.
“We really look to bring attention to these things and to recognize and reward the seniors who are showing greatness in these four areas,” Montague says. The nominees are then reviewed by a board and pared down to five semifinalists, before WCCO TV ultimately chooses the finalist. The students who garner the most votes online are also crowned the “Fan Pick” of the week. In May, a gala at Rush Creek Golf Course will celebrate all athletes of the week and commend them on their accomplishments.
