Ice lanterns add a glow to gloomy winter nights.
Looking for a way to beat the winter blues? Use nature to create art with ice lanterns, says Bachman’s floral horticulturalist Jeanna Smith. Ice lanterns are created by freezing water in a hollow orb and then placing a candle in the middle. While ice lanterns are meant to stand alone, Smith says they can be played up by using colored water, or by freezing fruit or plants inside. When Bachman’s decorates for the holidays, they often use ice lanterns with extras, “particularly things like cranberries or orange slices that show up so nicely through that ice,” Smith says. As a bonus, they smell nice too.
