Edina is full of rich history. In charge of recognizing and preserving that history is the Edina Heritage Preservation Board. In 2003, the board decided to keep citizens aware of the community’s preservation efforts with the Edina Heritage Award. Since then, members of the Edina community and others have annually nominated area spaces, and the board has selected two churches, five private homes and seven community points of interest for recognition. Senior planner Joyce Repya believes this award is important because “it spurs a conversation about the importance of heritage preservations and assists the board on sites we might not know about.” Past winners include Southdale Center in 2013, The Convention Grille in 2012 and the Morningside neighborhood in 2005, recognizing their centennial year. This award has also acted as a precursor to receiving landmark status, as was the case for the Edina Theater sign.
