Polkadots follows 8-year-old Lily Polkadot who just moved to the “Squares Only” small town of Rockaway. As the first Polkadot in an all-Square school, Lily faces an almost impossible task of gaining acceptance from her peers. From daily bullying, to segregated drinking fountains, Lily’s quest seems hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy whose curiosity for her unique polkadot skin blooms into an unexpected pal-ship. Designed by Moving Star Vocal Ensemble, the performance invites our youngest audiences into an expanding and contracting world and immerses them in a parachute’s movements as it becomes a metaphor for breathing. Story Club Minneapolis is a live monthly storytelling show featuring both an open mic segment and a curated set of performers from all over the Twin Cities arts scene and beyond. Story Club showcases true, autobiographical stories -- especially stories that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment. The Edina Concert Band, directed by Paul Kile, will take the audience back a century for a musical adventure at the 67th annual POPS concert. Themed "The Roaring 20’s," students in the top band at Edina High School will showcase their talents and creativity with music, singing, dancing, comedy performances, and more. Join One Voice in honoring the life and work of gay, African American civil rights activist Bayard Rustin with The Man Behind the Dream, a commissioned work that tells the story of Rustin’s early years growing up as a Quaker, singer, athlete and activist who became a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. Composer Steve Milloy uses two story-guides, the full chorus, and a 5-piece band to chronicle Rustin’s influence on Dr. King’s strategy of peaceful protest and pays tribute to current day activists. The Kenwood Symphony Orchestra presents a free classical concert featuring two works. First on the program is Violin Concerto in E minor by Felix Mendelssohn, featuring Kenwood Symphony's own concertmaster Ian Snyder on solo violin.
