Gardens | Entertaining

Imagine having the opportunity to get inside the creative mind of your favorite author and ask them your most burning questions.

When St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church formed 75 years ago, the Bishop hoped for a Sunday School enrollment of 40 children at the end of the first year. Edina church members predicted that they would meet that goal on the first day.

When the chill of a few rainy spring days starts to get to you, the combination of a pastry and coffee makes for an instant mood brightener.

What's in a name? When the organization now known as the Edina Chamber of Commerce was incorporated in late 1971, it was called the “Greater Southdale” chamber.

Spring is in the air! Although our Minnesota winter was a little unusual this year, it’s time to welcome back sunshine and warmer breezes and awaken our sleepy—“another gray day?”— senses once again. Here are a few ways to fully appreciate this new season.

Sight

OK. You’re a 14-year-old. Your world consists of your family, your middle school and your hometown. Now, think about willfully giving that up to attend an unfamiliar school in a strange city. And your family isn’t moving with you. That’s got to take courage.

Whether it’s pruning, planting, or (the inevitable) weeding, these five local nurseries and garden specialists want to help you check off your springtime to-do list and enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of your labors.

Botanicals and Baubles

It’s almost time to get into the garden! But before you do, let’s face it: even you could use a gardening tip or two. That’s why we checked in with Center for Adult Education coordinator Marsha Buchok, who shared some can’t-miss garden classes.

Anybody with the pleasure of meeting Gwen Hagen and Ann Rethlake will easily see that their passion for creating unique floral arrangements stems from something deeper than a love of gardening, it takes root from their 16-year friendship.

Local eco-organization Cool Planet may not be new (they were established in Edina in 2007), but they are always working on new ways to engage the community, get everyone talking about climate change, and figure out some homegrown solutions—from the grass roots, up.

Susie Peterson always dreamed of opening her own women’s clothing shop. As a retail buyer specializing in purchasing and procurement in Arizona for over a decade, Peterson finally made the jump to boutique owner after moving back to Minnesota.

Kelsey Christensen doesn’t keep her passion for figure skating a secret. “PeaceLoveSkate” can be found in the Edina High School senior’s email address.

When people think “Edina,” the first images that probably come to mind are plush suburban houses, fine dining options, and some of the Twin Cities best and most exclusive shops.

Once upon a time there were three gardens. The first garden held whispered secrets of family ties. The second soared towards the sun. And the third garden could wisp an unsuspecting guest around the world in 15 minutes.

Whether you're in the mood for a casual cook out, a graduation party, a lake cabin shindig, a family reunion—or any other type of summer party for that matter—we asked some fabulous, local party pros for tips on how to make your warm weather get-together one to remember.
