Since 1999, the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA) has grown to support a network of more than 800 survivors statewide. This year marks its 14th annual run/walk fundraiser, the HOM Silent No More 5K Run/2K Walk, an event that has changed the lives of many, including two-time primary peritoneal cancer survivor Peggy Jennings. After Jennings underwent treatments in 2003 and 2005 (she finished treatment in 2006), she exhausted herself by simply walking from the parking lot to the event. But instead of going home, she was inspired by MOCA mentors to get involved. This year, her employer, HOM Furniture/Gabbert’s in Minnetonka, is the title sponsor of the 5K Run and 2K walk September 7. HOM’s owners, Wayne and Rodney Johansen, have been supportive of the alliance, in part because they lost their mother to ovarian cancer. Both Jennings and HOM expect the event to break last year’s record-setting attendance of 3,300 with each participant spreading support and awareness every step of the way.
