Michael Tang, an Edina High School senior, was selected as a featured artist for Classical Minnesota Public Radio’s Minnesota Varsity Showcase. His piano teacher at Crocus Hill Studios, Jo Anne Link, had Michael and a few other students send in an application along with a recorded piece. A month later, the 16-year-old was chosen. He would record his piece in the MPR studio and sit down for an interview.
Michael has been playing piano since fourth grade, and says he has made a ritual out of practicing first thing when he gets home from school. “It’s the most consistent way to ensure that I can get in there each week,” he says.
Each year, a handful of these MPR featured artists are asked to perform at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Unfortunately, Tang was unable to perform due to a scheduling conflict, but was still grateful for the opportunity. He says, “It was still a great experience—a professional recording opportunity— and an honor to be selected.”
