Protecting Our Police Dog

The Edina Police Department gets a protective vest for its K-9.
K9 officer Blitz models his new protective vest.

Blitz, an Edina police department K-9 officer, is safer than ever before thanks to Vested Interest in K9s Inc., a nonprofit organization created to help protect K-9s in the line of duty. In November 2015, Edina’s police department was notified that Blitz would be receiving a generous donation from the nonprofit with an aim of lowering the risk of K-9 deaths. In the past few years, Minnesota has had five K-9 deaths on the job. “The dogs are considered officers, and we want them to be able to return home to their families, just like us,” says patrol lieutenant Brian Tholen. This vest can help protect Blitz from gunshots as well as attempted stabbings.
