Braemar Golf Course’s head golf professional Joe Greupner started playing golf at 4 years old and has a long history with the Braemar Golf Course.
Greupner was first taught the sport by his grandmother, who played golf her whole life and played her last round at age 96. “It’s a challenging game, but it’s a game that you can get better at your whole life,” he says.
Greupner began taking lessons in junior high from Braemar’s head pro, Harry Cooper. Not long after that, Greupner was offered a job at Braemar Golf Course.
After high school, he received a scholarship from North Texas State and after graduation, he returned to Minnesota to perfect his game. In 1978, Greupner took over for Cooper at Braemar as head golf pro. He’s been at Braemar ever since, teaching and overseeing many aspects of the course.
Greupner explains that golf is a social game that all skill levels can play together because there are handicaps to level the playing field. “There’s a social part that you don’t get with other sports,” he says.
Lessons are offered at Braemar for all skill levels. Greupner believes all skill levels can benefit from instruction, noting that great golfers still take lessons.
Greupner recalls teaching former Vikings player Rick Danmeier. The first time they met, Greupner had Danmeier hit a few balls. Afterward, Danmeier exclaimed that those were some of his best shots. Greupner turned to him and said “We’ve got a lot of work to do.” Greupner still laughs about it today.
Lessons taught by Greupner and other Braemar golf pros can be found online. Beginners through advanced classes are offered for both children and adults. Children can begin at age 4.
