David Murphy began to take photography seriously during a safari in Africa 20 years ago. This self-taught amateur, who’s completed online coursework through KelbyOne and who regularly reads photography books and magazines, has had several of his photos published. This photograph titled “Wheeee!” was the winner of the Raising Families category in the 2015 Images of Edina photo contest and has also appeared in our 2016 Best of Edina issue.
Family is a perfect way to describe many of this Edina native’s pictures. Although he is a retired CEO of Red Wing Shoe Company and is the current interim CEO of Fairview Health Services, it’s Murphy’s grandchildren who inspire much of his photography. “Wheee!” is a picture of one of Murphy’s four granddaughters, Nicole, who was 4 years old when the photo was taken in Murphy’s backyard. “My son threw her up in the air while I took the photo. I was on my knees shooting up so she looks higher than she really is,” Murphy says, noting that the child’s safety was never at risk.
Murphy shoots with a Nikon camera and regularly reads N-Photo, an online resource for Nikon users. He also reads Popular Photography, Photography Week and Digital Camera World.
