When the Edina Hornets baseball team faced the Jefferson Jaguars at Braemar Field on an April afternoon in 2015, photographer Bryan C. Singer was there. Singer once played for the Hornets and knows other former players who are now coaches or have kids in the program. During the national anthem, just as the sun was setting, Singer clicked this 2015 Images of Edina award-winning photo he titled Sunset at Braemar.
Singer is a professional freelance sports photographer who spent 10 years at KARE 11 as a videographer before making the leap back to still photography once the digital era dawned.
“They had put up the new scoreboard,” Singer says. “And I noticed these four players always stood in the same place on the field” during the national anthem. “At first, it frustrated me because their backs were to me.” But later, when Singer noticed how the sunset lit up the scoreboard and the synchronicity of players’ jersey numbers, he thought, “Oh! Everything just came into place.” He adds, “I shouldn’t get in the way of the [creative] process.” We agree, and so did the judges of the Images of Edina photo contest. In 2015, Sunset at Braemar won in the People category and was also awarded best in show.
