Master jeweler George Sawyer from Northeast Minneapolis was invited to Japan last summer for an exhibition organized to celebrate a 200-year-old jewelry studio. Sawyer, whose jewelry is available at Scheherazade Jewelers in Edina, was the first person to begin using a technique called mokume on gold. Mokume is a Japanese word for “wood-grained metal,” and celebrated artists from Japan wanted to learn more about Sawyer’s technique. “The high point of my trip was visiting these masters who grew up in a closed environment, so they all know each other’s work, but they don’t talk to each other about how they do it,” says Sawyer.
Sawyer’s creations can be found at Scheherazade Jewelers in the Galleria or at the website here.
