With each swing of their golf clubs, these Edina seniors are building community. They call themselves the Swinging Seniors and they’re part of a golf league offered by the Edina Senior Center. The group meets every Monday during the spring and summer at Braemar golf course for games, prizes and companionship.
“This league has participants who are at every level in the game of golf, which creates a very welcoming atmosphere among the league,” says Nicole Gorman, recreation supervisor for the Edina Senior Center. “Everyone I have met has been sociable and outgoing.”
The swinging seniors have met for quite a while and many have grown very close over time. “Some of them have played together for a very long time,” says Donna Tilsner, former recreation supervisor for the Edina Senior Center. “It’s social, they spend time outside and they get exercise. Plus, there’s a banquet at the end of the season.”
Golf club in your hands, good friends by your side and a warm summer breeze all around you—can you picture yourself swinging with the Swinging Seniors? Golfers must be over 55 to join, but everyone from beginner to advanced players is welcome. Private golf lessons are also offered at Braemar golf course for those who want to improve their game.
“Join us for the 2018 season,” says Gorman. Mark your calendar. Registration will open in February. Gorman encourages interested golfers to reach out to her at the Edina Senior Center for more information.
