Local retailers provide skate sharpening for winter fun.

The oncoming winter can mean hibernation for many. For others, the change of season means digging out the ice skates to enjoy the cold. Retailers assist winter weather enthusiasts by providing skate sharpening services. Pete Shields of General Sports has been sharpening skates for 10 years. He’s noticed a recent trend of at-home sharpening, but recommends one of his guys do it.
Kevin Jesseman of Total Hockey offers a tip to at-home sharpeners. “Don’t look at the skate, look at the wheel,” Jesseman says. The wheel’s thickness indicates when the skate is sharp enough.
