Edina Film Festival Celebrates Three Years

The third annual Edina Film Festival promotes local directors.
Keri Pickett's film "The Fabulous Ice Age," which will play at the Edina Film Festival, explores the history of theatrical figure skating and how this graceful art has dominated live entertainment for decades.

The world of film comes to Edina on November 7–9 for our town’s third annual film festival at the Edina Landmark Theater. This year’s ode to cinema highlights movies made in Minnesota or by natives of the Land of Lakes, and also puts local restaurants and venues in the spotlight. Events and after-parties in Edina restaurants will take place between films and after the curtain drops each night. Festivalgoers will have the opportunity to meet filmmakers at these events.

“We’re trying to create more of a party atmosphere this year,” says festival director John Swon. “So you don’t just come to the film, get your popcorn and leave afterwards.”

The festival’s closing film will be the cult classic The Big Lebowski, which was made by St. Louis Park natives Joel and Ethan Coen. Other films with Minnesota connections include The Fabulous Ice Age, produced and directed by Minneapolis resident Keri Pickett, which explores the history of theatrical figure skating and how this graceful art has dominated live entertainment for decades. And the 30-minute romantic comedy Far was directed by Minneapolis native Brian Crewe, who jokes that he practically grew up at Southdale shopping center.

“We are especially interested in presenting Minnesota-made movies, documentaries and narratives,” says the festival’s film curator Mickie Turk. “There is so much talent here.”

As in past years, all proceeds from the Edina Film Festival will benefit the Edina Art Center’s programs, classes, camps and workshops. “I’m very impressed with the quality and content of the films and have been quite moved by two of last year’s selections,” says art center director Michael Frey. “I appreciate the festival’s efforts to enhance the community and support EAC.”

Film Festival passes and single tickets are available at the theater box office or online at edinafilmfestival.org.
