Edina Teen Aims for Success in Self-Publishing

An Edina High School student realizes childhood dream of becoming a writer.
Rebecca Ohaeri's "Two Broken Birds" is available in paperback and digital from Amazon.

When fifth-grader Rebecca Ohaeri ran out of books she wanted to read, she started to write her own story. Now a senior at Edina High School, Ohaeri has one self-published novel under her belt, and a trilogy underway.

Ohaeri’s first novel, Two Broken Birds, is inspired by history, fairy tales and writers like Jane Austen. “I grew up with fairy tales, and history is kind of like a fairy tale, except it really happened,” Ohaeri says.

The high school has been very supportive of this budding novelist. Ohaeri hosted a book signing of Two Broken Birds in the school library, and many students stopped by. Ohaeri figured only her friends would visit her book signing and was surprised at how many people attended that she didn’t recognize.

Now that Ohaeri has experience with the writing and publishing process, she aims to finish the book she started in fifth grade. She plans to divide that story into a trilogy, describing it as an urban fantasy.

Ohaeri will attend college after she graduates from high school, but can’t decide if she should major in English, history or biology. She says she’s interested in so many subjects, it’s hard to pick just one.
