It all started when Edina local Mason Jones was little, drawing and creating with his family. He took art classes in high school and honed his skills. “As I got older and into my senior year, I kind of started to take things more seriously,” Jones says.
Once, when his older brother was home from college, Jones was surprised to discover him painting. But Jones’ brother encouraged him to give it a try and they started painting together before Jones began creating solo pieces. “I had a lot going on in my life, and I think painting definitely started to become an outlet for me,” he says.
Jones made his debut at the Edina Art Fair after his senior year of high school and made his first large sale. He says, “From there, everything just kind of kickstarted and I got into doing more shows in Minneapolis and collaborating with other artists. It’s just hard work and being persistent.”
Jones is pursuing an associate degree in fine arts at Normandale Community College. He’d like to open a store that doubles as a gallery space so that he can combine selling his custom clothing and shoes as well as display and sell his large paintings. “It’s all happening so fast, which is really cool,” says Jones.
Want to help support local artists during COVID-19? Jones suggests connecting through social media so artists can gain more support and recognition.
