We regularly feature photo submissions from our Images of Edina photo contest in the pages of Edina Magazine and online. This month, we asked photographer Lisa Asp to tell us about her photo titled “Female Red Winged Blackbird.”
When and where was this photo taken?
This image was photographed May 27, 2018 at Roseland Park in Edina.
What inspired the shot?
I had been challenging myself to photograph birds (it’s harder than you think!), so I got out one morning to see what I could see. Did you know red winged blackbirds nest in the tall grasses? I learned that while I was out!
What’s your favorite thing about the image?
I love her splayed out tail feathers and metallic-looking beak. People don’t often notice the females. They are so simple and “normal” in their coloring, so it’s interesting to really get a good look. The variance and coloring of the feathers is so beautiful.
What tips would you give an aspiring nature photographer?
Number one: Get out there with your camera! You will never get the shots if you stay home. Also, practice. It takes many tries to get the shots you love, and to be able to repeat the practice. If you love photography, take a class to learn new things.
