Becky Parkin once lived two blocks from Centennial Lakes Park in Edina and would often walk around the park with her Canon Rebel T2i camera in hand. Parkin is an amateur photographer who enjoys capturing enchanting nature scenes.

Nature can be like an outdoor canvas—ephemeral scenes of seasonal splendor. Some views develop organically, created by wind, rain and sun. Gardeners and landscape designers create other scenes, like artists who shape sculptures from soil, shrubs, and seeds.

 

The vibrancy of any community relies on a host of factors, and several local women are doing their parts to infuse Edina with artistry, ingenuity and some downright delightful homegrown businesses.

 

Any time a small-business owner includes a handwritten note tied with a ribbon in every order, you know she enjoys her work and brightening someone’s day.

 

A lot has happened in the career of 34-year-old artist Drew Beson since Edina Magazine last wrote about him in October 2008. For one, he is no longer active in the FRESH Marketing Group he founded to help promote his work.

 

When he was 17, Mike Korman showed up at a Philadelphia flight school and said he wanted to learn to fly. An instructor told him he needed only two things: money and time. With neither resource in great supply, he had to walk away. “For 30 years I waited,” he says.

 

You can’t judge a book by its cover—or a business by its name. At first glance, Batting Cages of Minnesota (BCM) and the Help Boardshop and Indoor Skatepark might appear to be venues solely for baseball players in search of extra reps or skateboarders looking for an indoor ramp.

 

This past October, Edina welcomed a new art gallery to the city with the opening of the upscale apartment complex known as 71 France. Set in the heart of Edina, the 71 France development consists of three buildings with 241 apartments and ground-floor retail space in two of the buildings.

 

Colonial Church in Edina is big on visible reminders—reminders that demonstrate stewardship, hospitality and the power of working together.

 

Last fall Marsha Milliken, Marie Sheridan, Nancy Subra and Joann Diamond of Federated Insurance in Edina embarked on the weight-loss challenge called Slim Down to Sin Town, sponsored by Medifast Weight Control Centers and KQRS Radio.

 

At a recognition banquet prior to the annual general membership meeting in November, Edina Soccer Club administrator Ann Buratti won the award for Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) Administrator of the Year. The award was well deserved.

 

Inspector Ashwin Chopra wakes up on his retirement day to learn that he has inherited a baby elephant. Heart disease has forced him to retire early from the Mumbai police department. Inspector Chopra’s wife, Poppy, names the sad baby elephant Ganesha.

 

Last November, Edina High School junior Mollie Mertes received a $1,000 Camp Enterprise Scholarship.

 

Sydney, Kim and James Sabow vacation in the south of France along with a French intern from Normandale French Immersion School.

 

An expansion of the Edina Promenade, located near Centennial Lakes Park, was completed in September with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The project had been in progress since spring 2015.

 

Every Monday from 9:30 a.m. to noon the women of the LeagueAires choir ensemble gather for rehearsal at Colonial Church of Edina, until the second week of January, when it is time to take their show on the road throughout the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs.

 

The Edina Garden Council is a nonprofit organization that began in 1953. It’s made up of five different clubs that meet regularly at the greenhouses in Arnesen Acres Park. Their mission is to beautify Edina with plants.
