According to legend, the naming of Edina in 1888 stopped just short of bloodshed. On one side were the Scots, who favored the name Edina, a nickname of the Scottish capital Edinburgh. On the other were the Irish, who argued for Killarney Lakes, to reflect their native country.

The annual Winter Ice Festival is back at Centennial Lakes Park, and this year it’s bigger and better than ever. This all-in-one event includes activities, food and fun for the entire community.

Edina is in the green. Environmental consciousness is at the top of the city’s agenda, and that priority is drawing notice statewide.

Parents hope that their children will grow up to pursue work that changes the world for the better.

Lifelong Edina resident Jay Belschner knows a thing or two about health care.  That’s because, with 25 years of experience in the field, he has learned what works—and what doesn’t.

Edina has been named one of the 100 Best Communities for Youth for the third year by America’s Promise. The organization cites five criteria in a community when considering this award: caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others.

The Edina Family Center (EFC) will host its biennial Wings Gala on January 25.

Tom Rob Smith's debut novel, Child 44, remains to this day one of the best thrillers I have ever read. Exciting, adventuresome, at times disturbing and extraordinarily original, Child 44 is one of those rare debuts that seems impossible to top.

Among Edina Public Works Director Brian Olson’s greatest concerns these winter months is snow removal.

In October, Edinans welcomed single-sort recycling, a step that the city hopes will increase recycling by 20 percent and make the community more eco-friendly. The ubiquitous blue recycling carts around town now accept most forms of recyclable waste.

The carpet is literally being pulled out from under a long-time Edina business. After more than 35 years, Grand Oriental Rugs held a going-out-of-business sale and then shut its doors this past fall.

For the second time in seven years, Normandale Elementary has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The French immersion school was honored along with 268 other schools nationwide for its high achievement rates.

Andrew Brandt, 16, may live in well-heeled Edina, but the Edina High School junior’s attention is focused on Minneapolis’ working-class Phillips neighborhood.

Sometimes the best photos can be taken in the most obvious of places.

Grass-fed. Sustainable. Organic. Farm to table. Free-range. Fair trade. These words are bandied about the food world with increasing frequency, but it’s not always clear what they mean. We want to make environmentally correct, healthy food choices, but a little guidance is in order.

Social media is our public face, our personal habit and our professional outlet. With 1 billion Facebook users, and Twitter hashtags on the television screen during last fall’s presidential debates, social media has become a necessity, not just an accessory.

You don’t have to chuck a puck very far in Edina to hit a hockey player. The local passion for this sport ignites the moment a kid laces up their first pair of skates and dreams of rising in the ranks of homegrown hockey power players fill their heads.

Edinans are increasingly interested in holistic healthcare, and for good reason. Alternative methods focus on enhancing the body’s natural capacity to heal instead of the traditional approach, which is to simply treat disease.
